Money is the central focus of a capitalist society and it's extremely difficult to get away from that focus. Some try to work with money in ways that benefit a community rather than just individuals. Networks supporting locally-owned businesses are one way; "community currencies" are another.
Others have no faith in national "fiat" currency since it can be printed by the government in quantities with no apparent limitations, and has no real backing in reality. It is "faith-based".

Local Currency, also called Community Currency, is paper currency printed and distributed locally, of value only within a community. This currency remains in the community instead of being removed by distant owners. It circulates from person to person, business to business, benefiting the entire community as it does.
Local currency can also empower citizens who may not normally be involved in the economic life of their community. And it's popular when no one trusts the national currency.
Local currency, which invoves use of locally-printed money, is often confused with barter, which involves only goods and services and no currency. We recommend you also see our Barter page.

Many people are recognizing that locally-owned businesses are much more beneficial to a community than businesses owned by outsiders or chains with little or no connection to the citizens and well-being of the community. Around the U.S. and in other countries, local citizens and businesses are supporting each other to the benefit of all.

Andersonville Study of Retail Economics
Study done in the Andersonville neighborhood of Chicago. It found:
Local merchants generate substantially greater economic impact than chain retailers.
Development of urban sites with directly competitive chain merchants will reduce the overall vigor of the local economy.
Modest changes in consumer spending habits can generate substantial local economic impact.
For every $100 in consumer spending with a local firm, $68 remains in the Chicago economy vs. $43 for spending at a chain store.
For every square foot occupied by a local firm, local economic impact is $179 vs. $105 for a chain store
